JUST IN: Kaduna State High Court Adjourns Ruling on El-Rufai’s Bail Application to June
The Kaduna State High Court has once again postponed its ruling on the bail application of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, shifting the decision to June, in a case that continues to attract nationwide attention.
The adjournment comes amid ongoing legal proceedings involving El-Rufai, who is facing multiple charges bordering on alleged financial misconduct, abuse of office, and related corruption allegations filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
According to court proceedings, the matter was initially expected to be decided in April after both the prosecution and defence had adopted their final arguments. However, the presiding judge, Justice Darius Khobo, cited the need for further review of submissions and amended charges before delivering a ruling.
The case has experienced several adjournments in recent weeks, largely due to procedural developments, including the amendment of the charge sheet by the ICPC. The prosecution reportedly revised the counts against the former governor, a move that required the defence team to reassess its legal strategy before the court could proceed.
Court documents and earlier hearings show that El-Rufai is standing trial on multiple counts related to alleged financial irregularities during his time in office. He has, however, consistently pleaded not guilty to all allegations, maintaining that the charges are politically motivated.
During earlier proceedings, the court had scheduled rulings on his bail application for April 14 and later April 21, but both dates were shifted due to pending judicial considerations and additional filings from both parties.
The latest adjournment to June extends what has already become a closely watched legal battle involving the former governor, whose case has drawn significant public and political interest across Nigeria.
Security around the court premises has remained tight during each sitting, with law enforcement operatives deployed to maintain order as journalists and observers continue to monitor proceedings.
Legal analysts suggest that repeated adjournments are not unusual in complex financial crime cases, especially where multiple charges and amended filings are involved. They note that the court may be exercising caution to ensure due process and avoid procedural errors that could affect the final judgment.
Meanwhile, El-Rufai’s legal team has maintained that their client is prepared to comply with all court conditions and has cooperated fully with investigative authorities. The defence has also argued for bail on the grounds that the former governor poses no flight risk.
As the case continues, attention now shifts to the newly scheduled June date, when the Kaduna State High Court is expected to finally rule on the bail application.
For many observers, the outcome could have significant political and legal implications, given El-Rufai’s prominence in Nigeria’s political landscape and the sensitivity surrounding high-profile corruption trials.
Until then, the former governor remains at the center of one of the most closely followed court cases in the country this year.
